The initiative marked an important milestone in strengthening educational cooperation between cities in Russia and China
A delegation fr om Polytechnic Lyceum №182 of the Kirovsky District of Kazan, comprising ten students and two English language teachers, spent a week in Xiamen, exploring the features of the local educational system.
The programme began at Xiamen №1 Middle School, where the students attended technology and music classes and presented a creative performance — a Tatar folk song accompanied by piano — which received a warm response from their Chinese peers. A key part of the visit was a tour of Xiamen University, offering the students a firsthand look at how academic and research processes are organised in China.
The cultural component of the trip enabled the students to develop a deeper understanding of local traditions. They visited Nanputuo Temple, one of the most renowned Buddhist temples in southern China, learned about the traditions of the tea ceremony and sampled local cuisine. Excursions to Xiamen’s historical sites offered the students a deeper perspective on the city’s cultural heritage.
The exchange aimed to strengthen friendship between students of the two countries. Despite the language barrier, the participants easily found common ground through shared interests and hobbies. The Kazan students invited their new friends to visit Tatarstan to experience the culture and landmarks of the republic’s capital.
The foundation for this cooperation was laid in autumn 2024. In November, a delegation from Xiamen took part in the session “School Exchanges as an Instrument of Intermunicipal Cooperation” held within the framework of the international forum “ROSTKI: Russia and China — Mutually Beneficial Cooperation.” During the forum, a cooperation agreement was signed between Lyceum №182 and Xiamen №1 Middle School.
In 2024, the schools also held their first virtual exchange meeting, which initiated regular communication and joint projects. Later, in August 2025, Kazan educators paid a return visit to Xiamen, wh ere the delegation received a detailed presentation of the partner school’s campus as well as several educational and cultural institutions of the city.
Today, cooperation between Kazan and Xiamen continues to grow dynamically and in multiple directions. The first virtual and in-person exchanges have laid the foundation for an ongoing educational partnership that strengthens friendship and mutual understanding between Russia and China. The next step will be a visit of students from Xiamen to Kazan, scheduled for early May 2026.
